Lifelong Learning: A Cornerstone of Living Well at Ebenezer
“There is a fountain of youth: it is your mind, your talents, the creativity you bring to your life and the lives of the people you love. When you learn to tap this source, you will truly have defeated age.”
Sophia Loren
Enriching Lives at Ebenezer Senior Living
When older adults participate in creative activities such as music, art, poetry, and dance, it's not only a great way to have fun and enhance social connections—it’s a powerful tool for improving health and well-being. Research shows that engaging in the arts improves cognitive function, reduces stress, and fosters social connections, all of which are critical for healthy aging.
For example, a study published in The Gerontologist found that seniors involved in creative programs felt that their mental health improved, and they were more satisfied with their lives overall. These activities stimulate the brain, encourage physical movement, and create opportunities for self-expression, helping older adults maintain a sense of purpose and connection.
At Ebenezer, we believe that learning is a lifelong journey. That’s why we emphasize the importance of Lifelong Learning as one of our signature Cornerstones. Ebenezer's Lifelong Learning program inspires growth, connection, and purpose to help fulfill our promise of a high-quality lifestyle that helps older adults live their best lives.
What is Lifelong Learning?
Lifelong learning is the process of keeping the mind, body, and spirit engaged by actively pursuing knowledge and experience. For older adults, it’s a pathway to vibrant living, artistic growth, and improved mental and physical health. At Ebenezer, our Lifelong Learning program helps residents stay connected to their local communities and beyond, fostering a sense of purpose and belonging.
Research supports the profound benefits of lifelong learning. A study published in Aging and Mental Health found that creative engagement enhances cognitive function, reduces stress, and promotes emotional well-being in older adults. Another study highlighted the role of social learning in combating loneliness and fostering community. These findings underscore the transformative impact of programs like Ebenezer’s Lifelong Learning Initiative.
The Four Pillars of Lifelong Learning
Our Lifelong Learning Initiative is structured around four key pillars:
Creative Engagement
Provides residents with consistent opportunities to experience joy and value through art, music, and other creative outlets.
“When I met Betty, she shared that when she moved to Ebenezer, she thought she was moving to a place where she would die but found out how to live through attending Lifelong Learning programs. Betty was encouraged to attend a painting class, and for the first time in her life, she picked up a brush, and the rest is history.”

Individual Expression
We offer a safe and supportive environment where residents can share their stories, ideas, and creativity. Through drawing, storytelling, pottery, and poetry, residents find their voices and share them with others.
“I began taking art classes because I did not want to be idle; it is important to be active. You can’t sit in a room all day.” Resident, The Fountains at Hosanna
Community
Creates spaces where residents co-learn and co-create, building connections and a sense of belonging.
“We offer line dancing for our residents in Lake Elmo, and they love it! One resident with some mobility limitations often dances from a chair. Seated or standing, dancers build brain-body connection and balance skills while having a blast”
Anna C. Lifestyle Coordinator
Legacy
Provides opportunities for residents to share their creations, stories, and knowledge, leaving a lasting impact on their families and communities.
“You make art, you find out you have things inside you that you did not know that you had before.” Resident, Arbors at Ridges
Partnering with Excellence
We partner with a variety of organizations to enhance the quality and variety of programs available to residents. For example, our partner, MacPhail Music for Life®, offers music education tailored to older adults, promoting cognitive and emotional health through the joy of music. Similarly, TimeSlips® uses creative storytelling to engage residents with dementia, fostering meaningful connections and moments of joy.
Lifelong Learning: More Than a Program
At Ebenezer, our Lifelong Learning program is more than an initiative—it’s a way of life. It turns everyday experiences into moments of discovery and growth. By bringing the arts, education, and community-building into daily life, we enable residents to experience enhanced well-being and a renewed sense of purpose.
Join Us in Celebrating Lifelong Learning
As we continue to innovate and expand our programs, we invite families, staff, and the broader community to join us in celebrating the power of learning. Let's make sure every resident at Ebenezer feels inspired, valued, and empowered to thrive.
