Do’s and Don’ts for an Easier Transition into Memory Care

Ebenezer | Aug 12, 2024

It’s important to communicate with your loved one about the transition into Memory Care and create a plan that will work best for them. Having all family members on the same page will help keep the transition gradual and easy. Here are some “Do’s and Don’ts” to keep in mind:

The Do’s

  • Listen. Your loved one may express some concerns or anxiety about moving to a new community. Listen to their point of view, while reassuring them and validating their concerns.
  • Collaborate. Work with one of our caring Move Managers. Our managers can help set up the new apartment to feel just like home.
  • Innovate. Consider leaving the TV at home and bringing music, family photo albums, art, and other therapeutic items.
  • Trust. Be assured that our staff in the Memory Care community are here to help your loved one settle into a comfortable routine. You will notice your family member more at ease and you’ll be content knowing that you’ve made the right decision.

The Don’ts

  • Don’t ignore. Recognize what stresses out your loved one and refrain from repeating to them about the move.
  • Don’t be indecisive. Decision making can be stressful for those with memory loss. Speak with one of our knowledgeable staff members about what to bring and what to leave behind.
  • Don’t over-pack. Memory Care apartments are smaller because large spaces can be overwhelming for people with memory loss. Be sure to not over-pack and only bring a manageable amount of items.
  • Don’t wait. To make the transition easier, start moving in earlier in the day so your loved one is settled in and can begin to enjoy their new apartment.

    Validate Your Loved One

Remember to validate your loved one’s feelings as they transition into Memory Care. They may express feeling concerned or anxious. Reassure them that everything will be okay and not to worry. Ebenezer Senior Living has a wonderful staff that is here to help every step of the way.
